Dark structure
High-contrast subjects can provide useful areas for placing necessary dark values over existing ink.
Project Study • Cover-Up Planning
The public portfolio does not label these images as before-and-after cover-ups. This study uses them honestly as examples of contrast, scale, texture, and composition that can matter in cover-up design.

Published project facts
No private client briefs or before photographs are published for these examples. The page focuses on transferable planning principles without claiming a specific tattoo covered another piece.
Composition analysis
A responsible cover-up page should not imply a before-and-after transformation when the source photographs do not document one. What the portfolio can demonstrate is Josh’s use of dark structure, layered texture, saturated color, and large compositions—the same kinds of tools that may be useful when planning over existing ink.
The actual plan depends on the old tattoo’s darkness, size, age, color, scar tissue, placement, and surrounding open skin. Clear photographs and an in-person evaluation are required before a cover-up concept can be accepted.
Design challenges
High-contrast subjects can provide useful areas for placing necessary dark values over existing ink.
A replacement design often needs additional space beyond the old tattoo to establish a stronger silhouette.
Fur, feathers, foliage, ornament, and layered forms can create transitions that a flat subject cannot.
Color cannot simply erase dense black ink, and not every placement or concept is a responsible cover-up candidate.

Photography note
The current portfolio provides the photograph shown on this page. A separately identified healed photograph and exact session record have not been published for this project, so the page does not imply either one.
